My first decorated cake was a Christmas one which I made in my cookery lesson at school, – along time ago! I made birthday cakes for my children, family and friends. It was a great hobby but like all things circumstances and interests change and I stopped baking so many cakes.
That is until my eldest daughter got married (my first wedding cake!) and grandchildren started arriving. In the last few years, I have been really lucky to have been on courses with some truly amazing tutors including Eddie Spence MBE, Debbie Brown, Lindy Smith, Hannah Edwards -The Cake Illusionist, Sarah Jones, Laura Dodimead, Barbara Luraschi and the lovely Sharon Wee.
But……. the grandchildren still needed christening, birthday, Christmas cakes.
Six years ago, after unexplained weight loss, painful joints and other symptoms, I was diagnosed with Coeliac disease. Cakes as I knew them…………
But……. the grandchildren still needed christening, birthday, Christmas cakes. My passion and desire was still there! Because I cannot resist nibbling the cut off pieces of cake (taste control) I had to relearn the art of making cakes with gluten-free ingredients. After many trials (and weight gain) I am able to use a special blend of gluten-free flours that I am happy with and all my cakes and bakes are gluten-free.
